Alto Golf was opened in June l99l, in the presence of the Portuguese President. It is located between Alvor and Praia da Rocha, and 5 kilometres from the city of Portimão. Alto Golf was the last course designed by the legendary Sir Henry Cotton. In his own words, the undulating terrain makes each hole a new challenge, from mastering the double-dogleg to softly putting the tiered greens. It is a course for those who like challenge in their game. The open aspects and ruggedness add to the excitement and the Par 5 16th, appropriately named 'O Gigante' at 604 metres and one of the longest in Europe. The natural advantages of the terrain have been used to sculpt a garden-like course with mature pine, carob, almond, fig and olive trees lining the fairways and giving a long-settled feeling.
