As the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup and home of The Celtic Manor Wales Open, a leading European Tour event, The Celtic Manor Resort offers world-class golf courses and the ultimate in golfing facilities.
Twenty Ten Course
Built to stage The Ryder Cup in 2010, the course opened for play in July 2007. The first course to be built specifically for golf's greatest team tournament, it measures a robust 7,493 yards off the back tees and has a par of 71.
With water hazards on half of its holes, the course has six signature holes and presents many more memorable tests and risk-and-reward dilemmas. One of the features of the spectacular new course is its variety with many of the earlier holes having a links-like feel with some long rough and greenside swales, before the middle section of the course reveals the full extent of the lake-lined challenge.
A tough finishing stretch culminates in a real sting in the tail at the 18th.
Roman Road
Roman Road, the first of the resort's courses, opened in 1995 and soon established a reputation as one of the top courses in Britain.
A championship venue for top professional and amateur events, Roman Road is nevertheless ideal for all levels of play. The course offers a variety of tees on each hole and has generous fairways and greens.
Roman Road takes its name from the ancient East-West highway of Roman Britain crossing its fairways to the nearby Roman fortress town of Caerleon from London and Bath. Several Roman roads, including the main route connecting the fortress of Caerleon with the town of Caerwent, cross the land where the Roman Road is situated.
In 1997, £300,000 was invested in under-soil drainage. Like Wentwood Hills, Roman Road has around 15 miles of perforated pipes laid under the fairways to take water away and provide superb conditions all year round.
The Montgomerie Course
Designed by Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie, the course measures 6,371 yards and has a par of 69. The front nine takes as its framework the starting and closing holes of the old Wentwood Hills championship course which were not part of the plans for the new course for The Ryder Cup. The back nine has been created from scratch on land that previously housed the 18-hole Coldra Woods academy course.
Throughout the new course, Montgomerie has put his own stamp on the layout. A traditionalist in design terms, the eight-time European No 1 has added deep pot bunkers to give the course a linksy look.
Spectacular views abound with dramatic tee shots over valleys and breathtaking downhill shots. Two long par fives, a number of short par fours and several testing par threes all add up to an exciting and rewarding challenge.
There is also a world-class golf academy featuring a floodlit driving range, practice range, golf shop and teaching bays and a luxurious golf clubhouse, The Lodge, with its own bar, restaurant, health club and spa.
