The Locker Room :: Driver Review Area

Taylor Made's latest offering had just been delivered into the Rightclub office, and I was the lucky one that got his mitts on it first.

I took the opportunity to enjoy a day out at the fabulous Rolls of Monmouth golf club, and thought what a good place it would be to put this club through its paces.

As a 17 Handycapper, I normally use a Taylor Made 580 driver 10.5 degree, and hit it fairly well. When we received the Demo club I was worried that the 9.5-degree loft might cause me some trouble.

Instead of going to the range to try the 540 out, I thought what the hell. Although the 540 has a slightly smaller head, it still gives you plenty of confidence whilst over the ball. With anticipation I pulled back this monster and prepared for the unknown!

No word of a lie,staight down the middle. This club feels so good, I really thought that it would be no match for forgiveness, compared to my beloved 580, but this beast was better. Even my partner who frequently plays with me, could not believe the way the club hit the ball.

For the next 5 holes , I continued to hit the ball straight and long. Even if I mis-hit the club it still gave me distance and a fairly straight trajectory. My average drives are 220-240 yards, but with this club I was hitting 250 plus (even when I had a bad connection).

Throughout the day I continued to get a feel for this club and was loathed to lend it to my playing partners (who have had equal success with the 540). My only dilemmas now is to trade up to the 540 XD, and convince my wife that its £345.00 well spent.

Without doubt, this club is one of the best drivers I have hit. I will be trying the 580 XD in the not too distant future and will let you know if it is as equally pleasurable experience.
