As usual I went straight down to my second home, Aldwickbury Park Golf Club, avoiding the driving range on route due to the excitement of test driving these clubs. The first club to be christened was the good old 7 iron. After a couple of swings I took aim and fired. It felt very soft to hit, and gave the impression that it had more weight behind the club, than my normal X14 iron.
The clubface is slightly smaller than that of the Callaway, but it did not trouble me too much. After a few more holes, I was genuinely striking the ball sweeter, and getting a great trajectory across the range of the Slingshot irons. This new design compares to the feel of the Big Bertha range of irons, but the Nike version seems to be slightly more forgiving .I even managed to get the 3 Iron off the deck on more than one occasion.
Now the important news does this type of iron offer the humble golfer more distance? I did find that the 5 Iron gave me between 5 and 10 yards more distance, but the crucial benefit for me was that of the ease of use, that the Slingshot gave me. Even with a smaller head, the weight of these irons gives you a lovely swing path, which in turn generates a solid strike off the head.
My resident professional Paul Toyer gave me a playing lesson soon after my test round with the Slingshots, and thought that these clubs were a sound investment for the 12 to 24 handicappers. He also commented that when compared to my x 14 irons, my swing path was better with the Slingshots.
I have now had these clubs for a month, and used them on over six rounds. It has put the cat amongst the pigeons with my returning to my beloved X 14 irons. The only question now is weather I trade in Old Faithful for these new pretenders!
These irons are very unusual to look at, but do feel very easy to use. With all the choices of irons out in the marketplace at present, I think that Nike have got a winner with the Slingshot. If you get a chance to try these beauties you will be amazed at the results. Well done Nike!
Comments from Ian Mcaulay
“Since I first saw these clubs, I knew that I would have to get a set,
I was playing with Wilson ultras, and now wish that I never sold my ultras, because
the slingshots do not suit me, in respect to distance and accuracy. I bought
the Wilson ultras as a game improvement club, and they were really doing the
job well, on the green in 2, in some cases. The Nike Slingshots have a thick
chunky sole, which more often than not tears into the ground, and now I find
myself 4 or 5 shots on to the green, being a 28 handicapper doesn’t help,
the worst club in the bag is the sandwedge, which I feel was designed strictly
for bunker play, sweet chips close to the flag just don’t happen if you
play anywhere other than the bunker, that said they are great for bunker play.
I will continue my season and hope that maybe I can start getting my moneys worth,
that maybe down to the pro shop for an iron play lesson, never the less DEMO
the clubs before buying, I am a Nike nutter, and bought these solely because
of the tick.”
