Driving the Ball

27 / Aug / 2004
In his second of the series, former Open Champion, Paul Lawrie talks us through his thoughts about Driving the ball

Paul Lawrie: info@paullawriecollection.com

STEP 1

The ball is placed opposite the inside of the left heel with the hands pretty much in line with the ball. With the ball and hands in that position the ball will be struck on the upswing. This takes away any chance of catching the ground at impact and also with the larger headed drivers allows the big head and technology to take over and create the correct flight for you. Driving the ball well requires the right set up

STEP 2

The posture position should be almost as tall as possible with a slight bend in the knees and a slight tilt forward from the hips. In the picture from behind the ball, the shoulders are directly above the bend in the knees and the front of the feet. Correct posture and ball position allows the body both to turn naturally and let the body swing the club, as opposed to being in a poor position when the hands have to try and correct the faults, which is both difficult and inconsistent.
Good Posture can really help Driving the ball consistently

SUMMARY

One final tip on driving the ball is the tempo or rhythm of the swing. The same effort that goes into hitting a middle iron should be used to hit a driver.

The length of the club and the upright posture position will naturally increase the club head speed which in turn will give you maximum distance.

One piece of information to remember is that if you take someone who slices the ball and ask them to hit the ball as hard as possible, they will slice it even further. What this tells you is that the harder you swing the club the more your fault comes out.

Unfortunately virtually everyone has a fault, so try and swing within yourself and let the modern equipment do some of the work.
